The Supreme Court on Wednesday slashed the $2.5 billion punitive damages award in the 1989 Exxon Valdez disaster to $500 million.

The court ruled that victims of the worst oil spill in U.S. history may collect punitive damages from Exxon Mobil Corp., but not as much as a federal appeals court determined.

This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

This is a huge win for Exxon-Mobil. Very bad news. If you don't remember, they were sued for an oil spill in 1989 because the captain of the tanker was drunk and he crashed it. They kept appealing for years to minimize the amount they would pay. Think about it. They were originally supposed to pay $2.5 billion in 1989, about $4.5 billion in today's dollars. The supreme court ruled they only have to pay $500 million. Al Gore's gonna be pissed.

They were supposed to pay 5 billion that was cu to 2.5 billion and now to 500 million

Maybe the Alaskans should pay Exxon a few million to reimburse them for the money they spent cleaning up the spill. After all, Exxon didn't mean to spill the oil, and it was the Alaskans that insisted their shores be cleaned up.

However, I suppose the people in Alaska, who's lives and business's where destroyed, can get by with $15,000. That should cover their energy cost for a year or two

After reading more about this "second" Valdez disatar, that being this Surpreme Cour Ruling, I would like to retract my "tounge in cheek" comment about this very serious problem.

This is an outrage!, and now that the "Surpreme 9" have spoken, there is nothing anybody can do about it.

Can the oil companie be that powerful?!

Did they get to the Supreme Court Judges?!

A company with 40 Billion Dollars in one years profits....

can't and won't help American citizens whose lives they have destroyed?!

What the hell is going on??!!

      Okay. Take 2:
WTF!?!?!? This is @!$%#ing ridiculous. Bush's neocon so-called "Supreme" Court has crossed the @!$%#ing line. I am not part of a country that excuses corporate irresponsibility. This is not a game to me, and I sure as hell hope it's not a game to anyone. Scalia ought to be indicted. Now today with the lift on handgun bans in Washington? Scalia and all those who dissented should be shot. That would teach them. We CANNOT STAND BY. Our country has been lost to fascism--corporate fascism. And now we are giving Exxon-Mobil the thumbs up. Tomorrow Exxon-Mobil will be rationing your food. What's in the water supply. Salmonella's in the tomatoes. Well guess who put it there. EXXON MOBIL!!!

      Is this a little better?

      RIGHT ON DAVID!

That's more like it......obviously your as pissed off about this as I am.

      Because It's downright wrong!

      "Scalia ought to be indicted"

Absolutely! The five of them should be recalled!

      (never happen)

This is the most blatant abuse of power and authority I have ever seen.

This country just screwed a deserving group of American citizens out of One and a quarter BILLION dollars!

Dude, check out the "im talkathon" or whatever ad. It's absolutely hilarious. You read this blog entry be what's supposed to be some twenty something guy trying to make a difference, and then at the bottom there's a disclaimer written by Microsoft that the blog author is fictional. What a stunt.
